What is web design? It's an art form, really; it combines both visual artristry displayed via graphic design elements with the coding artistry that displays it on the world wide web.
A skilled graphic designer doesn't make a skilled creator of web sites. Why? Because it's a completely different set of skills and another way of looking at things.
A graphic designer creates beautiful, stunning graphics and the web developer makes it all work. It's a left brain + right brain type of approach that is difficult to find in real world situations. The natural designer - me - is that rare person who can design as well as develop websites.
Noteworthy
Not all web designers create their own graphics. Some work from existing templates outward, which ends up creating a web site that looks A LOT like all the rest of the web sites out there. I call that the 'template look'. Sometimes, a web designer will simply use a purchased template and call it their own. Always ask first if an original design will be used!
